Everything UK merchants need to plan a Magento to Shopify migration — from catalogue complexity and ERP integrations to SEO preservation and go-live.
Magento has served thousands of UK merchants well — but as maintenance costs rise, upgrade cycles slow and talent becomes harder to find, many brands are making the move to Shopify. The good news: a well-planned migration is lower risk than most teams expect. The challenge: Magento's flexibility means every store is different, and a copy-paste approach will fail.
This guide covers what UK merchants should expect when migrating from Magento (Open Source or Adobe Commerce) to Shopify or Shopify Plus — based on real migrations we have delivered, including Torque GT's move from Magento with ERP integration and custom product filters.
The most common triggers we see: escalating hosting and maintenance costs, slow upgrade paths (especially on Magento 1 legacy installs), difficulty finding experienced Magento developers, and a platform that has become over-customised to the point where simple changes take weeks.
Shopify offers predictable costs, managed infrastructure, a vast app ecosystem and a faster path to market for new features. For B2B and high-volume merchants, Shopify Plus adds checkout customisation, wholesale channels and higher API limits.
Start with a full audit: catalogue structure (simple vs configurable vs bundled products), customer groups and pricing tiers, ERP/WMS integrations, custom checkout logic, URL structure and indexed pages, and third-party extensions mapped to Shopify equivalents.
Build a migration roadmap with phases: data export and mapping, theme design and build, integration development, redirect planning, staging and QA, then launch with monitoring. Allow 6–10 weeks for a mid-complexity UK store; high-volume or heavily customised builds take longer.
Products and variants are the hardest part. Magento's attribute sets, configurable products and custom options need careful mapping to Shopify's product model. Images, descriptions, metafields and collection assignments should all transfer cleanly.
Customer data must comply with UK GDPR — export with consent records and migrate securely. Order history can be imported for reference (customers viewing past orders) but will not be live transactional data in Shopify. Plan how B2B pricing, customer groups and trade accounts will work on the new platform.
Magento URL structures (especially with layered navigation) rarely match Shopify's defaults. Map every indexed URL to its Shopify equivalent and implement 301 redirects before launch. Preserve title tags, meta descriptions and canonical logic.
Submit your new sitemap to Google Search Console immediately after go-live and monitor crawl errors for 4–6 weeks. A migration without a redirect plan is the single biggest cause of post-migration traffic loss.
If your store has more than 10,000 SKUs, complex B2B pricing, ERP integration, custom checkout or multi-store setups, professional migration support pays for itself in avoided downtime and SEO loss.
