Custom Shopify design & build UK

A custom Shopify design and build with On The Road typically takes 8–12 weeks and is quoted between £10k and £40k, fixed after discovery. You get a theme written for your catalogue and brand, not a marketplace theme with the logo swapped. Larger B2B or multi-template builds can run to 12–16 weeks.

Your store should feel unmistakably yours — and convert like it was built for your customers specifically. We design and build custom Shopify storefronts from the ground up.

We do not reskin marketplace themes. Every build starts with your brand, your catalogue and your customer journeys — then we design a storefront that earns its keep from launch day. That means mobile-first layouts, clear product discovery, streamlined checkout and performance tuned for Core Web Vitals.

Our design process pairs editorial-quality visual direction with pragmatic Shopify architecture. We work in Figma, prototype key flows, and build in Liquid and modern front-end tooling so your team can maintain the store long after launch.

From lifestyle brands like Nova of London to trade distributors like Hart Wholesale, we have delivered custom themes that balance rich catalogues with clean, professional experiences. If your store needs to do more than a standard theme allows, we are the team to call.

What “custom” means here

We design in Figma and build a Shopify theme your team can edit. Sections, product templates and collection templates are made for the way your products are actually bought — fitment, trade pricing, editorial lookbooks, or a dense wholesale catalogue. We do not resell a ThemeForest theme and call it bespoke.

The useful test is maintenance. After handover, a merchandiser should be able to add a section, change a homepage module and publish a landing page without opening a code editor. That only happens if the theme is structured for Shopify’s theme editor on purpose, with documentation and a training session, not as an afterthought.

Nova of London needed a storefront that felt like the brand rather than a generic fashion theme. Hart Wholesale needed a trade catalogue that stayed clear when the product list got long. Those are different designs. The process is the same: journeys first, then templates, then build.

Design, speed and conversion

A handsome store that fails Core Web Vitals is a redesign you will pay for twice. Layouts are mobile-first because that is where the sessions are. We watch Largest Contentful Paint, layout shift and how the product page behaves on a mid-range phone, and we treat third-party scripts as a budget, not a free-for-all.

Conversion work at this stage is structural: findable products, honest delivery information, a product page that answers the question the customer arrived with, and a cart that does not surprise people at the last step. A/B testing and ongoing optimisation belong on a retainer once there is traffic worth testing. Building the test harness into a store with no baseline is theatre.

If you already have a theme that is mostly right, a full rebuild is the wrong purchase. Theme customisation — new sections, templates and performance work — is scoped separately, typically £6k–£12k. We will say so in the first call if that is the better fit.

How a build runs

Discovery covers catalogue shape, brand constraints, integrations and what “done” means for launch. Design then covers the templates that carry the business: home, collection, product, cart, and any landing or account pages that are not the default. Development happens in a theme you can preview. QA is cross-device, including checkout as far as Shopify allows on a custom theme, before DNS moves.

Launch includes handover notes and a session with the people who will run the store. We do not disappear unless you want us to. Support retainers start from £2,500 a month for monitoring, fixes and the next round of improvements.

The store you launch with is one your team has already used. Staging is shared early enough that collection structure, sold-out states and a long variant list get checked by the people who know the catalogue. That review is a scheduled step, not a Figma comment the week of launch.

Timeline and cost

A focused custom build is usually 8–12 weeks from discovery to launch. Projects with complex catalogues, B2B accounts or a large set of templates are more often 12–16 weeks. You see the staging theme well before that end date.

Custom design and build is quoted between £10k and £40k. Theme customisation on an existing store is £6k–£12k. Both are fixed prices after discovery, not open-ended day rates. See the pricing page for how those bands sit next to migrations and retainers.
